USE OF DOMAIN

RUGBY UNION REQUEST,

RIGHTS OF OTHER BODIES

Would the council be prepared to fix a date when the *Paeroa Rugby Football Union could commence matches upon the Paeroa domain was the question asked of the Paeroa Borough Council at its October meeting by the Rugby union.

The letter from the Rugby union informed tlfe council that the union would be finalising the inter-union fixtures for next season at the beginning of next month and it therefore required to be advised as soon as possible when its right to use the domain would commence.

A full explanation of the position was contained in a further letter to the council written on behalf of the chairman of the Rugby union, Mr W. F. Faber, of Paeroa. The letter stated that during the past season the Paeroa union had joined with the Waihi union in inaugurating a new system of play involving the clubs of both areas in one competition. The competition had proved a great success and it was desired to renew it next season. It had been found that making arrangements when the season was close to hand did not permit of full consideration being given to all details and it had been found impossible to hold adequate discussions between the,, two separate unions in the restricted time available. Waihi union was ready to commence play on the first Saturday in April, whilst Paeroa union was delayed until the third in April and that had considerably disorganised the programme. Continuing, the letter went on to state that in view of the difficulties encountered last year the Paeroa union wished to. open negotiations for the continuation of- the scheme for next season in order that the off months could be utilised to give full consideration to the matter and enable adequate discussion to be held with Waihi union. The council would fully appreciate the fact that such discussion was not possible unless it was known when playing fields would be available to it.

The union would therefore greatly appreciate a reconsideration of the position by the council and also an assurance that the domain would be available to the union during the period requested. The ’cricket club had the domain during the summer months and he had been advised that the cricket club would be receiving a visit at Easter, said the mayor, Mu Edwin Edwards. He suggested that the two bodies should come to an arrangement. The cricket club asked for the use of the ground until the end of March next so that the Rugby union’s request did not conflict with the permission granted to the cricket club, said Cr R. Jeffrey.

It was pointed out that in the coming year Easter happened to be in March but other years it fell in April and that point had to be considered. The visit of the Auckland cricket team to Paeroa at Easter was an annual fixture.

Cr C. O’Brien moved that the Rugby union’s request be granted and it be given the use of the domain as from April 7, the first Saturday in April. The motion was duly carried.
