MATATOKI CENAL

RAISING THE STOPBANKS

PREVENT MORE FLOODING

The board’s 19RB dragline was now operating in the Matatoki canal, where channel improvement was gained by getting material to top up the stopbanks, said Mr G. Davies, chief engineer g.t the September meeting of the Hauraki Catchment Board held recently in Te Aroha. Mir Davies said that the object of the present work was mainly to top up the banks to prevent serious flooding which has occurred on several occasion recently.

The low in the banks were due mainly to the banking material being very soft when excavated and the same difficulty was being experienced now in getting firm material to top the bank. The area was tidal and getting the fill from under water and small berm widths did not make matters easier.
