MAUKORO CANAL

MINISTER IN FAVOUR VISIT TO DISTRICT ENTHUSIASM EXPRESSED The Minister of Works, the Hon. W. S. Goosman, was enthusiastic towards the Maukoro canal project, said Mr H. M. Corbett, when making his report to the September meeting of the Hauraki Catchment Board held recently in Te Aroha. Mr Corbett informed members of the board that Mr Goosman visited the district early in September and at short notice advised he would like to discuss the Maukoro canal project. Arrangements were made for the works committee to meet him at Te Aroha at 3 p.m. on September 7 ; but owing to a last minute change in plans Mr Goosman had 1 to advance his visit to 9 a.m. on that date. As a result only Mr McMillan, with the chief engineer, the secretary and himself were able to meet him. Proposals regarding the Maukoro project and Piako river improvement scheme were fully explained to the Minister also the stage to which the investigations have advanced. With his local knowledge of the district, Mr Goosman was well aware of the problem, and expressed his interest in the proposal and advised he was sympathetic towards it. He went further than that by concluding that he was enthusiastic towards the proposal. As they had no data on the economics of the proposal yet, the-financial side of the matter was not discussed.
