TANGLED SUBSIDIES POSITION IN BRITAIN FEDERATED FARMERS’ VIEW As a result of up-to-the-minute overseas information received by the Auckland provincial office of Federated Farmers, the following interesting points are made in relation to butter price in Britain, states a communication from Federated Farmers to the Gazette. (1) The retail price of butter in Britain is to be raised by 2d to 2/per pound. (2) The Netherlands Government has reduced its price of butter to Britain to below its domestic price and the producers have been compensated by an export subsidy. (3) The subsidy bill in Britain is running above £l4O million. (4) Butter has always been heavily subsidised and, at its present rate, is still a little over 17- per pound. (5) The butter ration in Britain is shortly to return to fohr ounces a week. (At present it is five ounces). (6) The four ounce ration of less subsidised margarine has not been fully taken up. Butter at 1/lOd per pound was still cheaper than margarine. (7) It is suggested that the latest rise in the price, i.e. 2d, to 2/- lb, may be an attempt to straighten out the tangled maze of foodstuff subsidies in Britain.
