DEPUTATION HEARD
WHANGAPOUA SETTLERS
COROMANDEL AND' THE BAY
On Friday afternoon, settlers of Whangapoua, including the 12 farmers who have just been installed on rehabilitation farms, received deputations from Coromandel and Whitianga to hear opinions as to the respective conveniences and amenities that each township could offer to Whangapoua residents.
After listening attentively to both deputations the settlers retired and held a meeting amongst themselves to decide which township was to be used as their business centre, and decided in favour of Coromandel. Their main argument against Whitianga was the unsatisfactory road connection betwee the two districts.
The Whitianga deputation consisted of Messrs N. Davies (carriers), N. A. Well's, R. A. Simpson and F. Kelsey (Mercury Bay Dairy Co), R. R. Smith and A. W. White (Mercury Bay Bus Co.) All these men were also members of the Mercury Bay Chamber of Commerce.
From Coromandel were Messrs W. Preece and H. V. Denize (Coromandel Chamber of Commerce), A. Notman (Coromandel R.S.A.) B. Hawkeswood (local suppliers to N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co.), lan Scott (dump manager for N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co. at Coromandel). Representing the N.Z. Coop. Dairy Co. were Messrs |S* T. Oliver and E. J. C. Townshend.
The chairman of the meeting was Mr A. Goudie of Colville.
