RESERVING SEATS

ON RETURN JOURNEY

FARMERS’ COMPLAINT

REPLY iBY N.Z. ROAD SERVICES

Considerable difficulty has been experienced apparently owing to the fact that a passenger is unable to reserve his return seat at the place of departure, wrote the Auckland provincial assistant secretary of Federated Farmers to the, manager of the N.Z. Government Railways Road Services 1 . The letter, which came before the recent meeting of the executive committee of the Northern Thames subprovince, asked for comments as to the exact position and for information as to the method of making reservations.

The matter was a most important one, said the, chairman, Mr S. E. Hall, and he Understood that some reply had been given that the offices of the road services were understaffed.

Since the meeting held at Thames last week, the following reply has been received by the Auckland provincial secretary of Federated Farmers from the manager at Auckland of the N.Z. Government Railway Road Services. “In reply to your letter of April 24 I have to advise you that facilities are available at our main depots and agencies for reservation. of seats. A passenger wishing to make a journey can make reservations for the outward journey and, provided the date of travel is known, for the return journey as well. The booking clerk writes to* the depot concerned forwarding the proper reservation slip, a {reservation is made and returned to the originating office. However, £f the reservation is one for a quick return the passenger is required to call in, at the depot from which the return is to be made, for confirmation. 4, ‘lt is to be understood however that during busy periods it js not always possible to allot seats as required on a particular timetable as there are only a certain number of vehicles available for the particular service. “Reservations are made two months in advance and those people who live in districts away from depots are allowed two months and two days so their requirements are given the same preference as those people handy to depots.” -
