CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
GRANTS FOR THE PENINSULA
A report on the meeting of the Main Highways Board, which he attended in Hamilton recently, was given by Mr E. Deeble, chairman of the Coromandel County Council, at the July meeting of the county council.
The chairman advised councillors that with regard to Coromandel county the followingrecommendations had been made by the board:— No. 309 main highway: A sum of £1455 had been provided for maintenance. The resealing was to be done by the Ministry of Works on a contributory basis. No. 1 bridge: A sum of £l5OO was provided as being a payment on account. No. 14 (Christensen’s): |£2oo was recommended to cover engineering costs. No. 4 bridge: No finality had been reached with regard to &o. 4 bridge, No. 11 bridge: £2OO had been provided to cover engineering costs. No. 530 Main Highway (Wharf road):’The sum of £l4O for maintenance was again renewed. Could any indication be given as to the future policy of the board with regard to the taking over of moretroadis as main ihigthways,. asked Cr T. V. Whittle. Replying, the <sBairtmtan said no indications in tha£ direction were evident. In. fact (the board wouldnot agree to taking over any additional roads other than those already applied for, namely from the Coromandel hotel past the hospital to Tokatea turn-off and from Mercury Bay Post Office along to Buffalo beach. Asked what was the attitude of rural members of the board to the enormous cost of the four lane luxury road out of Auckland, which was beihg done at the expense of outlying districts, Mr Deeble said that the Main Highways Board could not proceed any further until Mr Goosman brought forward his policy.
