OBITUARY

MR PERCY HAROLD SUTTON A RESIDENT OF MARATOTO Just recently there died at his residence at Maratoto valley, Hikutaia, Mr Percy Harold Sutton, at the age of 63 years. Mr Sutton was botn in Blenheim in 1887 and was the son of the late Mr Charles Sutton, who was very well known in that district, where he followed. the occupations of sawmiller, flaxmiller and farmer. Mr Percy Sutton was educated at Gibsontown school and after leaving school he worked with his father driving a traction engine for a time, later coming to the North Island in his early 20’s, spending a period in Wairarapa and Waikato before taking up farming on his own account on the Waihi plains in 1913.

When World War I broke out Mr Sutton responded to the call and served overseas, later returning to farm life at Ngahinepouri. In 1926 he returned to Waihi and in 1940 with his family moved to Hikutaia. Deceased was a director of the Te Aroha-Thames Valley Co-operative Dairy Company Limited, representing the Waihi ward from 1930 until 1937, and during the last two years of that period was deputy chairman. For a short time he was a member of the Waihi intermediate school and the Hikutaia school committees.

The late Mr Sutton was very interested in pedigree Jersey cattle, and at Ngahinepouri established the Panama stud during the early 20’s, and at the time of his death was engaged in building up the Leslie Downs stud. In the year 191'5 the late Mr Sutton married, at Carterton, Miss Ellen Frances Court, and he leaves surviving him his widow and seven children, Mrs J. Hamilton (Huntly), Mrs G. Trembath (Hikutaia), Mrs V. Robertson (Cambridge), Miss Nella Sutton (Hikutaia), Mr Arthur Sutton (Maratoto), Mr Theo Sutton (Cambridge), and Mr Charles Sutton. There are six grandchildren of the marriage. Surviving deceased are a sister, Miss Mary Sutton of Auckland, and two brothers, |Mjessris H. H. Sutton of Cambridge and Mr R. W. Sutton of Mangere.
