COST £4670 FOR YEAR BOARD’S ESTIMATES CHAIRMAN GIVES REPORT In discussing the estimates for the coming year of the Thames Hospital Board, the chairman, Mr J. W. Danby, at the April meeting of the board, stated that the total amount estimated for the maintenance of the Paeroa Hospital for last year was £4284. The actual expenditure was £4599/6/6 and the estimated sum of £4670 was provided to meet the needs of the coming year. Provisions for the hospital were estimated at £650, the increase this year being due to the general price increase of commodities.

For surgery and dispensary accounts an amount of £l5O had been provided and £5OO had been estimated as the amount required for domestic staff. This year the sum of £3OO had been estimated as the cost of fuel and light, the extra being privoded to cover the cost of oil fuel for the automatic burner and to provide for the auxiliary hot water. The estimate for salaries and wages had been inereased'this year to £3OOO. The reason was that the nursing staff had been increased during the year to

full strength but during the year the hospital had been short of a maid. Provision had been made for automatic increases to the staff under the regulations.

Under the heading of establishment an amount of £3OO was provided, which was less than the amount expended last year but the tar sealing contract had been completed and no provision had been made for such expenditure in the coming year. Wages for the upkeep of the grounds would be heavier in the coming year, as unfortunately the gardener and handy man had retired from active work, and in future the board would have to pay considerably more for the same work. Provision had also made on the estimates for drainage and water to the sterilisers.
