COROMANDEL GATHERING

The August meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was well attended, and was presided over byMrs Ball, who opened the proceedings with the institute prayer. A welcome was extended to Mrs Longley as a member. Mrs Scott, who was born in Coromandel, was present in the capacity of voluntary organiser and a hearty welcome was extended to,her when the president with a few well chosen remarks pinned a sjfray of freezias on her. Mrs Scott suitably replied. Mrs Venables was elected as delegate to the Paeroa arts and crafts festival and to be in charge of articles sent by the Coromandel institute. Congratulations were extended to those members who had taken part in a comedy at a festival organised by the Thames-Hauraki Federation of Women’s Institutes at Thames, when they won the cup in their section. Mrs Hinchco was complimented on winning the prize for the best character in the plays at the festival.

Letters were read from the recipients of parcels sent to England. It was decided to hold a shop day early in September.

After a brief discussion it was decided to adopt the committee’s suggestion' td hold a concert in October, performers to be solely institute members.

Mrs Scott gave a most interesting and enlightening talk on institute affairs, embracing the proceedure at meetings, the early history of the women’s institute and its present day activities. She afterwards gave a demonstration on how to make attractive sprays for decorating coats or evening frocks. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded her, for her talk and for the demonstration. The roll call was a mystery parcel, the proceeds of the parcels being in aid of institute funds.

An enjoyable supper was served by the hostesses after which the meeting closed with the singing of the national anthem.

The results of the competitions as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Inglis 1, Mrs Reddy 2, Mrs C. Anderson 3; pikelets, Mrs Clark, only entry; travelling shilling, Mrs Reddy.
