WINTER CARTING

TO BE RESTRICTED MUCH DAMAGE TO ROADS COUNTY COUNCIL ACTS Considerable damage was being done to the county roads by the cartage of logs and something must be done about it, said the engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, at the July meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. Mr Shaw said that he thought that during the months of July and August loads should be restricted to the limits provided by the classification. He felt sure that the council would have the fullest co-operation of the traffic inspector. Cr. F. L. Franklin agreed with the view taken by the engineer. He seated that operators were engaging in heavy traffic and carting very heavy logs over Uw roads and bridges and great damsß was being done to the county roads and bridges. The speaker said that some of the very farmers who were complaining of the condition of the roads were at fault and were allowing logs to be carted from their own properties. The county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, informed the meeting that it was permissible for the council to prohibit the conducting of heavy traffic on all bounty roads during the winter months.

The chairman, Mr T. A. Barrett, thought that the loads should be limited. The council did not wish to prohibit all heavy traffic.

■Cr. Franklin instanced loads of as many as five heavy logs on one lorry. They were big logs and long logs and from the property of a farmer who was full of complaints about the state of the roads.

Cr. S. H. Thompson stated that it would be better to control the loading and not prohibit it. Cr. J. J. Fitzgerald expressed the opinion that the council should advertise the fact that it intended to take action against operators overloading. The following resolutions were then carried by the meeting:— (1) That the traffic inspector be instructed to give close attention to the cartage of logs within the county and to the prosecution of offenders whose loads exceeded the limits provided by the classification. (2) All log haulers to be warned of the action of the county council. (3) No permits for loads in excess of the limits provided by the classification of roads to be issued before the end of August.
