CHARGE OF THEFT
“ BECOMING A HABIT ” STOLEN CAMERAS Charged with .stealing at Wellington on February 28, 1949, a camera, valued at £5, the property of Alex Chase, and that on June 10/1949, at Wellington he did steal a camera, valued at £5, the property of Peter Donald Bowker, Materoa Watene, a factory hand of Paeroa, appeared before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Paeroa court. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges.
Constable J. L. Brown conducted the case on behalf of the police and stated that both cameras had been recovered. Accused was, said the constable, still suffering from rheumatic fever and still undergoing hospital treatment. “ The next time you commit' theft you will get a straight-out sentence,” said the magistrate. “ Theft is becoming a habit with you but in view of your health I am going to be lenient.”
Accused was admitted to probation for the period of 12 months. He was ordered to make restitution of £5 15s in such instalments as the probation officer should determine.
