IT CAN RAIN THERE
FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA CONTINUOUS WET DAYS DELAY IN DELIVERY OF POLES “With the exception of five days the whole of the 3» days I was in Australia it rained continuously and the flooding there was the heaviest for 53 years,” said Mr R. Sprague, manager of the Thames Valley Elec-tric-Power Board, to members present at the July meeting of the. board. “ Unfortunately the flooding there is in the timber cutting district adjacent to Gloster, Grafton, etc., and I am afraid it will be some months before any further supplies of timber will be obtained from those bush areas owing to the necessity for the cutters to build additional roads through the cutting areas.” Mr Sprlgue went on to state that while he was in Melbourne he interviewed the Victorian Electrical Commission with regard to the treatment of poles. The speaker explained that the Commission had been experimenting for tome years and were still experimenting with treatment in order to lengthen the life of poles. He inspected plants and learned' that the treatment unfortunately gave only an additional life of three years and that it had been found that the cost of treatment was not warranted. In authorities had come to the conclusion that the only solution was the use of concrete poles.
