WAITAKARURU INSTITUTE RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS The July meeting of the Waitakaruru Women’s Institute was held recently in the Waitakaruru hall when Mrs C. Hinton presided over a very large attendance of members. There was an unusually large amount of correspondence dealt with, much of it being very interesting. This was read by the secretary, Mrs A. Coxhead, and was put through as expeditiously as possible. There was a letter from the Young Farmers Club enquiring whether the institute had any objection to the formation of a social club by the young ladies of the district. The meeting decided to support the idea and to give all encouragement possible. Three letters were read from old ladies in Britain, thanking the institute for food parcels received. They were specially grateful for gifts of soap.

Word was received from Miss Elsie K. Morton that she would be pleased to be guest speaker at the institute’s birthday celebrations in November next.

A roll call, sing, say br pay, brought forth a number of stories, hints and jokes, while Miss Spence, a recent arrival from England, entertained with her experiences in a British telephone exchange during the war. A competition was held to make a hat from a sheet of newspaper and three pins and this was won by Mrs C. Hinton. Another competition was won by Miss Marie Coxhead.

The competitions resulted as follows: Best bloom, Mrs A. Coxhead 1, Mrs R. Duffin 2, Mrs Hegh 3. In the most original table arrangement, some of the entries were really charming, the results being Mrs C. Hinton with a bowl made from a pumpkin, filled with purple and gold flowers 1, Mrs Mounsey with a waterlily made'from an orange skin 2, and Miss Marie Coxhead with an ingenious .arrangement of vegetables and seed heads 3.
