THAMES HOSPITAL COUNCIL OPPOSES PROPOSED LOAN OF <184,000 The Thames Hospital Board had decided to borrow £184,000 to enable it to commence the first portion of its scheme for rebuilding the Thames Hospital. This information was given in a letter from the secretary of the board, addressed to the Ohineitfuri County Council and placed before the July meeting of the council held in Paeroa. In accordance with statutory provision the board was required to give notice of such intention to the council and of its intention at a meeting to be held on August 18, 1940, to pass a resolution directing the secretary of the board to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to borrow the £184,000. Details of the estimated expenditure were set out as follows:—

Building first portion nurses’ home, £170,745; purchase Druids Lodge property, £1500; purchase of Baillie street, £400; alteration of sewerage and power mains in Baillie street, £3300; preliminary expenses (test bore for D.5.1.R.), £731 9s 3d; furnishing for new nurses’ home, £2000; purchase Karaka road lane, £100; removal dental clinic, £250; building two residences for medical staff, £5OOO.

The communication further stated that if the council objected to the board’s proposals then written notice of such objection, setting out the reasons therefor, must be lodged with the secretary of the Thames Hospital Board not later than Wednesday,. August 17, 1949. The chairman, Mr T. A. Barrett, moved that the council object to the proposal on account of the site of the Thames Hospital not being suitable as a site for a hospital.

Mr Barrett said that it was wrong to commence spending a huge sum of money upon an unsuitable site. Upon being seconded the resolution was put to the meeting and carried unanimously.
