COUNTY RATES

NEED FOR PAYMENT

EMPHASISED BY COUNCIL

The need for ratepayers, both European and Maori, to co-operate with the council in the prompt payment of rates so as to enable the council to maintain the roads to the limit of its financial resources was emphasised by councillors at the May meeting of the Coromandel County Council held recently in Coromandel. The following were present: Chairman, Mr E. Deeble, Crs. 11. T. Robinson, J. H. Reddy, W. J. Hare, S. H. Leßoy-Dyson, T. V. Whittle, A. J. Denize, F. H. Purdom and the county clerk, Mr J. H. Lucas.

range has been diverting the water from the wheel tracks—opening watertables and culverts, etc., also assisting at McLeods quarry.

Kuaotunu-Wfiitianga: The surfaceman here has only been working part time on this area as his assistance has been required at McLeods quarry. With the exception of a few weak patches this road is in fairly good order.

Whitianga: It is anticipated that crushed metal will be available from McLeods quarry to repair the worst roads in the Whitianga township riding.

Whenuakite-Hahei: A new surfaceman has been engaged and is at present working on watertables, culverts, and cutting back growth. Port Jackson-Colville: Sections No. 17, 18, 19 of this road have received attention of the grader while some bad corners on the No. 17 section have been widened by the bulldozer. This has improved the -vision and surfaces of the road considerably. Shingle from the Falcon hay pit was placed on the widened corners.

Port Charles-Colville; The grader is at present operating on the roads in this district. It is hoped to have some metal broken out at the Waikawau quarry in the near future prior to the wet weather setting in.

Colville: The hopper at Bridle’s quarry has been filled with metal, for use in the district. The surfaceman on this section of the road is doing good work. Colville-Coromandel: Little maintenance has been extended to this road during the period owing to one of the surfacemen resigning. However the surface of this road is in fair order, but it is desired to have (if possible) the services of another surfaceman on this section, especially during the winter months. Coromandel: Footpaths from the 4nd of the tar-sealing north have been prepared ready for the final coating of fine crushed metal which it is anticipated to procure from Egan’s quarry.

“ Generally as will be noted, that in most instances, concentration has been directed on making provision to have metal available at various places in an endeavour to be prepared for the wet season." concluded the report.
