THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY “Public Service” WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 1949 KEEPING TO ALLOCATION

With the lake levels at the generating sources in a reasonably satisfactory state, it may be expected that there will be no immediate crisis in the supply of electrical power throughout the North Island. Experience has shown, however, that it requires only a small setback, such as may result from insufficient rainfall, to precipitate a serious position in both domestic and industrial consumption. Warned that the present year might see x further crises of this nature, supply authorities in most districts have instituted rationing systems to ensure an equitable distribution of power to all users. At the same time appeals have been made for the conservation of power.. In spite of these precautions the consumption in the North Island last week above the allocation, though by only a relatively small amount —a consumption of 30,630,000 units compared with an allocation of 30,529,000. \

If this is 'the position during a period of mild weather, there is a very evident danger that the onset of cold spells, which may be expected from now on, will see consumption far exceeding allocation. As has happened in previous years, over-consump-tion at peak periods in the winter may necessitate arbitrary cut-offs, with consequent hardship and inconvenience in the home, in industry and in the operation of public utilities. This is a danger that everyone desires to be avoided. In the long run the deciding factor is the measure of co-operation from the consuming public. This cooperation is necessary not only during the critical winter months, but at the present time in order to minimise the draw-off from the water supply reserves. The Minister of Works, Mr Semple, has advised of the steps being taken to overcome faults at Lake Waikaremoana, and from time to time statements are made of progress in the construction of new hydro-electric schemes in both islands. These are matters beyond the control of the consumer, and he must look forward to several more of restricted supply before the new generating schemes come into full operation. It is not a happy outlook, but the public must bear the brunt of the Government’s lack of foresight in meeting hydro-electric-ity needs.
