SPORTS AT NGATEA

SCHOOLS ON THE PLAINS MEETING HELD FRIDAY NGATEA WIN CHAMPIONSHIP The attendance at the seventeenth annual athletic championship sports meeting of the combined Hauraki Plains primary schools, held at Ngatea on Friday, was considerably less than usual. Although the umber of children competing wa- , n to the usual standard the attendance of parents and supporters was much smaller than in past years. The weather was fine but overcast with a cold breeze.

Championship trophies were won as follows: School Championship (Herbert Smith Trust Cup), Ngatea, 89i points; Rose Bowl (Mrs Benney Rose Bowl), Kerepehi, 491 points; Small Schools Cup (Herbert Smith Trust Cup), Kopuarahi, 32 points; Hauraki Plains Gazette Shield (schools with rolls under 40), Pipiroa; Boys’ Points Cup (H. Smith Trust Cup), Ngatea, 46 points; Girls’ Points Cup (Herbert Smith Trust Cup), Ngatea, 431 points; the Bird trophies, for most points obtained by boy and girl— Boy, H. Samuels, Kerepehi, 15 points; girl, J. Singh, Kaihere,. 13 points; Harold Cup, girls’ overhead ball, under 15 years of age, Ngatea; Trembath Cup, tug-o’-war, Kerepehi; Hauraki Plains Motors Staff Cup, boys’ junior relay, Ngatea; Motion Cup, boys’ 440 yards, H. Neate, prior to the presentation of the above trophies at the end of the programme, expressed the appreciation of the committee for the support of the parents

and the work of the teachers who had striven so hard to make the day the success it had been. He made special reference-to the wbrk of the secretary, Mr A. Flay, who had done so much to organise the meeting. Speaking to the children, Mr Neate congratulated them on the competitive spirit which had been shown and the excellent performance that they had put up. He spoke of the value of clean competition and the good it did in moulding the character of the young. Referring to the attendance of the general public, Mr Neate said he had 1 been a little disappointed this year. It was, he said, one of the days when every resident of the Hauraki Plains was expected to get together at Ngatea, and he expressed the hope that in the future the attendance of the people of the district at the combined schools’ sports would be bigger and better.. In conclusion Mr Neate said that this was his final year as president of the association, an organisation of which he had been one of the foundation members, and he made an appeal to all to pull together to carry on the sports so that they would continue as successfully in the future as they had in the past. Referring to the profits which the association rnade each year, he explained that these were distributed among the competing schools, last year each school receiving a basketball, and it was proposed to make a similar distribution again this year. Officials on the day were as follows:— President, Mr J. W. Neate; vicepresidents, Messrs H. R. Hill and H. Hayward; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. A.
