ANNUAL PICNIC

HELD AT WAIOMU HIKUTAIA CHILDREN SAND CASTLE COMPETITION The Hikutaia school held its annual picnic last week at Waiomu, the popular Thames coast beach. Those children not accompanied by their parents in private cars were conveyed by 'bus. Luncheon and afternoon tea were supplied by members of the school committee and the ladies’ committee, and each child st the end of the day received a packet of sweets. Races were held during the morning, the afternoon being occupied with sand castle and swimming competitions. The 100 yards senior boys school swimming championship was won by Max Murdock, and the 75 yards senior girls swimming championship by Judy Cross, while the junior boys 75 yards championship was won by Edgar Bennett and the junior girls 75 yards championship by Glenis Reid. Following are the results of the swimming races:—

Seniors, boys, 100 yards (championship): Max Murdock 1, Brian Frazer 2, Noel Avery 3. Girls, 75 yards (championship): Judy Cross 1, Eleanor Bax 2, Bonny Paetai 3. Junior 75 yards championship, boys: Edgar Bennett 1, Grant Morrison 2, Douglas Morrison 3- Girls: Glenis Reid 1, Elizabeth Ingley 2, Lynette Cox 3.

Sand castle competition (teams of 3), seniors, boys: T. Teiri’s team and M. Murdock’s team equal 1. Girls: Dulcie Morrison's team 1. Junior girls: Lynette Clarke’s team 1. The athletic events proved popular, and were run in age groups. Following are the results:— Five years, boys: Allen Davies 1, Colin Lowry 2, Roy Hopping 3. Girls: Gerda Fisher 1, Sylvia Bax 2, Beverley Phillips 3.

Six years, boys: Jamie Clarke 1, Graeme Hanlen 2, Henry Spinks 3. Girls: Patricia Ward 1, Pauline Alley 2, Marie Paetai 3.

Seven years, boys: Peter Cross 1, Brian Robinson 2, Allen Lowry 3. Girls: Dorothy Bax 1, Helen Avery 2, Jillian Morrison 3.

Eight years, boys: Michael Spinks 1, Walter Ingley 2, John Orr and Graeme Smith 3. Girls: Lynette Clarke 1, Glenis Bax 2, Connie Teiri 8.

Nine years, boys: Murray Bennett 1, Colin Short 2, Billy Kelly 3. Giris: Thelma Reilly 1, Elizabeth Ingley 2, Urslia Phillips 3.
