HIGHER SALARY

URGED BY BOARD MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENTS The possible difficulty of retaining ■medical men with high qualifications as superintendents of hospitals on their present salary scale, was the subject of some discussion at the February meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. It was thought that incomes earned by private practitioners under the Social Security scheme were much higher than medical superintendents’ salaries and that some increase should be granted jn respect of the salaries to make them comparable with doctors’ incomes. After a lengthy discussion in committee, Mr C. W. Parfitt made a resolution which was seconded by Mr J. W. Neate and carried to the effect: “ That the members of the Thames Hospital Board respectfully urge the Department of Health to accord urgency to -the application for advancement in the salaries of hospital medical superintendents. My board is confirmed in its opinion that unless salaries are increased to be comparable to incomes earned by private practitioners under Social Security it will be difficult, if not impossible, to retain medical superintendents at the lower salaries available. We view this as a very serious matter as affecting the securing of the highest qualified medical men for our hospitals and suggest that adequate advances be sanctioned by your department without delay.”
