WEEK-END TENNIS VALLEY DEFEATED VISITING AUCKLAND PLAYERS Two Auckland tennis teams played members of the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association at Te Aroha last week-end and although the Thames Valley won only five of the 38 rubbers there were some very close matches and some excellent tennis witnessed. Exhibitions such as this provide a stimulus for the sport and serves to improve the standard of play. It was regrettable that there was not a greater number of spectators to witness the matches, but the day was a success in that it was a step forward in the progress of tennis in the Valley. Acknowledgment is due to the Te Aroha club for the work put into preparations for the day. The Auckland players were under the management of Mr S. A. Cleal, while Mr A. Walker was in charge of the Thames Valley team. With such a large number of players of such good class it is difficult to nanne any in particular who showed up on the day. B. Becroft and Miss E. Becroft, however, gave exhibitions of first class tennis, while a diminutive junior player, Miss D. Taylor, showed that she might be a future champion. There were players on both sides who showed a considerable amount of skill at the sport. The results, with Auckland names first, were as follow:— Senior Men’s singles: P. Becroft beat K.
