POINTS PRIZES

PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB PRESENTATION BY MAYOR CHILDREN’S COMPETITIONS Winners of the children’s points competitions for the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club were presented with their trophies in the Regent Theatre Friday afternoon, May 28, by the mayor of Paeroa, Mr Edwin Edwards. Mr A. Laurent, president of the club, said how pleased he was to see so many children and their parents attending and congratulated the children on their fine running and sportsmanship. “I do not know of a club anywhere in New Zealand,” he said, “ where there are so many children competing as in the Paeroa club.” Mr Edwards, when called upon to address the gathering, said he was very happy to be looking down on “ the beaming faces of so many healthy young kiddies.” Such health and happiness was probably Drought about, he said, by their association with the athletic club. Hawkins’ Cup “ It does not really matter whether you win, lose or draw,” he said, “ as long as you get fun out of the game, and I am sure that that is how most of you look at sport.” He urged those who had won medals to look after them, “ for when you are as old as I am,” he said, “it gives you great pleasure to be able to look back on medals which you won when you were 10, 12 or 15 years of age.” In presenting the Hawkins’ Cup, Mr Edwards called for an expression of appreciation from the children for Mr Bert Hawkins, who had presented the cup for the boy or girl over 12 years and under 15 with the highest aggregate points. Mr Hawkins, he said, was at present suffering from ill health, but had always taken a very keen interest in activities of the children. Three hearty cheers from the kiddies signified their appreciation of the gift. Cheers were also given for Mr Laurent and Mrs H. T. Gibbons, secretary to the club, for the work they had done; for Mr H. Wheeler for allowing the club to use the theatre, and for the mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, who presented the trophies.
