WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TURUA MAY MEETING ADDRESS ON LEPER ISLAND Mrs Wood presided over a good attendance of members at the May meeting of Turua branch of the Woipen’s Institute. The meeting opened with the reading of the aspirations. The president’s letter was read and general business discussed. Mrs Wood gave a very full report of the council meeting.

Rev. Rowe from Thames was the guest speaker, and he took the members on an imaginary trip to Makogai, the leper island in the south Pacific. All listened intently as he told of the lepers’ beautiful gardens, fancy work and mode of living! He spoke of the marvellous work that nurses and doctors were doing for these unfortunates. Rev. Rowe was thanked for his excellent address and for coming such a distance.

Mrs Harris was welcomed as a new member. Mesdames Rowe, Clark and Strong were welcomed as visitors. The competition, “ The president’s face,” to be drawn at the meeting, caused a good deal of amusement and was won by Mrs Workman with Mrs Harris second. Other competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs Beagley 1, Mrs Allen 2; two best parsnips, Mrs Sparkes 1, Mrs Beagley 2. The trading table again did a good business. Afternoon tea served by Mesdames Stewart and Workman, brought a happy afternoon to a close.
