PAEROA CONCERT

VARIED AND BRIGHT UNITED NATIONS’ APPEAL VERY SUCCESSFUL EVENING A very enjoyable and ably conducted concert, arranged by the Paeroa Methodist circuit to raise funds for the United Nations’ Appeal for Funds for Children was held in the Centenary hall, Paeroa, on Wednesday evening, May 26,

The chairman, Rev. J. Ainsley Daglish, outlined the purpose of the concert, which was a move on behalf of the members of his church to do their bit towards the appeal; however, to achieve a variety in the programme they had drawn widely on outside local talent from Paeroa and surrounding districts. He expressed thanks to the visiting artists, some of whom had come from Te Aroha, and also to the young children who had sold tickets for the concert. One little girl, he said, had sold as many as 31. Applause from the audience signified its appreciation of these efforts. An apology was received from one of the artists, Mrs J. Mitchell, who was to have sung a bracket of soprano solos. Good Programme 9 The programme, which was mainly a musical one, 'but which contained several excellent comedy sketches, was well arranged and fully merited the audience’s hearty applause. One or two informal little touches on behalf of the chairman helped to make the evening go with a swing. At the conclusion of the items, the mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, expressed his indebtedness to the members of the church and other helpers for the ; concert. He said the appeal which i they were sponsoring was the most ; important ever launched —that of ’ saving the destitute children of the i world. “ When I came into the hall,” ; said Mr Edwards, “ two things met i my eye,” and he indicated the two 1 posters at the front of the hall which ] contained the words “ Peace on i Earth” and “Goodwill Towards [i Men.” “We will never have thatp world of pea;#, nor will we have that i goodwill towards each other unless we first undertake that the children of II the world are not going hungry, cold, 1 unclothed or without medical supplies, r This is the biggest appeal that has i ever been made from a humanitarian point of view,” he said. He hoped that Paeroa would raise a sum of I which they could be justly proud. J Appreciation of Audience c “ I am sorry that there were not 1

more people to listen to the feast of here tonight,” he continued and expressed his pleasure at the quality of the items presented. “ I will not endeavour to discriminate between them because it would be doing an injustice to ail.” He concluded by calling evidence of the audience’s appreciation which they showed with a hearty round of applause.
