GIFT EVENING

CUBS AND SCOUTS ENTERTAIN MISS GRACE HILL HONOURED An evening’s entertainment was arranged by the Cubs and Scouts of the Tirohia group and the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers to honour Miss Grace Hill who has been assistant cub mistress for over three years and has resigned from her position to be married, and will be leaving the district. As Miss Hill entered, John Noble presented her with a beautiful spray and then Mr Johansen, president of the Cub and Scout committee introduced her and her future husband, Mr A. H. Dally, to the parents and friends present and apologised for the absence of Com. Scott of Te Aroha, everyone then joining in the singing of the national anthem. Cubs put on a play called “ Merry and Bright ” in which David Wild was the very able professor and then the always popular campfire singsong took place, Alan Vine singing a solo between the brackets. The Scouts

gave a most amusing shadow play showing an operation performed in hospital which brought loud applause. Raymond Mace pinned a spray on Mrs G. W. Wild for her kind assistance at the piano and Peter Marlin performed his last duty as a Cub by presenting Miss Hill with a painted mirror from Akela and past and present Cubs. Next, Mr Johansen came forward and made the presentation for the group committee—a silver plated bread board and knife, and Arthur Johansen, Scout leader, gave the Scouts’ gift—a lovely pyrex casserole. Mr Johansen said how sorry they were to be losing Miss Hill and what a great help she had been to Miss Veale. He thanked her for all past services and wished her every happiness for the future. Miss Hill lesponded saying she had enjoyed all

the times she had spent with the Cubs and appealed for some one io come forward and help Aliss Veale in the w<ak. She thanked everyone for the gifts and -aid she appreciated very much the most enjoyable evening.

Two Cubs, Peter Martin and Phtl’p Schrieber, were then put through the going up ceremony and were admitted to the Scout circle. Mrs Noble and Mrs C. Jackson then took over for the women’s division an,: brought in a large clothes basket of gifts f\ i the guest. After the opening of these Mr Daily thanked ali pi esent for the lovely evening and gilts which had been given them; the ladies of the division then Served a delicious supper, the evening being brought t ) a close by the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.’’
