Cocoa — 5s 10d
A tale was told at the last meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee of an incident which occurred in their early days. Two badly-needed typewriters were purchased out of the committee funds at a total cost of £l5 without first referring the matter to the Auckland Education Board. Aftei- the books were submitted for the annual audit they were returned to Paeroa “ tagged” as follows: “You must refund this £l5 and also 5s lOd for cocoa.” (!) These instructions, however, were ignored and some time later a large case was received from Auckland, the contents of which were six brand new typewriters. Evidently the Auckland Education Board had repented its harsh words in regard to the typewriters but the 5s lOd spent on cocoa was an offence that could not be condoned, for no supplies of that were forthcoming.
