POOR WEATHER

HAMPERS GALA DAY

CRIDGE CUP PRESENTED

EVENTS HELD DESPITE RAIN Adverse weather conditions last Saturday may have kept many wouldbe supporters from attending the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s gala day, but they did not by any means dampen the spirits of the children who competed. Clad in their brief little black and white shorts and red tops, sometimes with raincoats slung over their shoulders, more often without, they ran their races and played about in the rain quite happily and unconcernedly. The gala day was arranged to wind up the club’s events for the season and also to compensate for not being able to hold its usual Christmas party for children on account of the poliomyelitis epidemic. It was most regrettable, therefore, that the weather was so poor, because officials and members of the club had done their best to provide a good day’s entertainment for both young and old and their efforts warranted a far better support than was able to be given. Value of Sport In his address, Mr A. Laurent, president of the club, thanked all those present who had been “ brave enough ” to come out in such weather. “ I think the club merits the support of the public,” he said, “ as it has taken a keen interest in the children, and,” he added, “ the children of today will be the athletes of tomorrow.” One of the club’s first child runners, he said, was Ray McKenzie, who this year won the New Zealand High Jump Championship at Dunedin. He urged the children to keep up their athletic interests “ not merely for the trophies you may win but to keep you physically fit and what is more, to show you good fellowship—how to be able to lose just as cheerfully as you

can win.” Mr Laurent then expressed his thanks to Mrs H. Gibbons for the fine work she had done as secretary and to the officials for their assistance on Wednesday nights and other

sports days. Mr C. C. Webb, deputy mayor, apologised for the absence of the mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, and then presented the Alf Cridge Memorial Cup for cycling to A. Vosper. This cup had been presented, he said, to perpetuate the memory of the late Alf (Laddie) Cridge, one of the club’s first riders, who was killed overseas in the last war. Vosper rode the bicycle which belonged to “ Laddie ” in the race in which he won the cup. The thanks of the club were ex-

pressed both to the St. John Ambulance members, who had attended all the sports events, and also to Mr Ralph Poole of Auckland, who donated 20 pounds of sweets for the children. These were distributed at the end of the day in the form of a lolly scramble which delighted the kiddies. Prizes for all events were donated by the club itself.
