PIPIROA INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

MARSHALL CUP TO MRS SILCOCK

The annual meeting of the Pipiroa Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday, March 17, Mrs Powell presiding over a full attendance of members.

Remits for the forthcoming council meeting were dealt with at length. In support of an appeal from Corso members unanimously decided to contribute a coin each month to purchase a spinning wheel and also to bring a small gift to enable parcels of necessary articles to be forwarded at intervals to Corso, the president reminding the members that this effort was additional to the “ Parcels for Britain ”

In her presidential address Mrs Powell thanked every member for help so readily given and for work so earnestly done, making her year as president a pleasure. Without a good committee no institute could progress, continued Mrs Powell and the institute was indebted to the committee for the work done on their behalf. Mrs Powell asked the committee and stewards to accept shoulder sprays with her sincere thanks. Mrs .Silcock and Mrs Scott, vice-presidents, on behalf of the institute presented beautiful sheafs of flowers to Mrs Powell, president, Mrs Keane, hon. secretary, and Mrs McAulay, hon. treasurer.

The secretary presented her annual report and was congratulated by the president. Mrs Powell said it was with very great pleasure that she called on Mrs Silcock to accept for one year the “ Marshall Cup.” This cup is presented to the member, who in the president’s opinion, lives up to the aims and objects of the institute to the best of her ability. Mrs Powell said there was no need for her to extoll the many splendid qualities of Mrs Silcock, her 'straightforwardness, her honesty of purpose and the amount of work she put into the institute was well known to every member.

Mrs Silcock, in reply, said that she had got more out of the institute than she had put in and that she was sure that had it not been for the institute she would not have got to know all the women in the district as well as she did and she hoped that the institute would continue to grow in the future years. Mrs Silcock was accorded musical honours.

The prize-winners for the year were as follows: Highest aggregate, Mrs McAulay 1, Mrs Powell 2, Mrs Silcock 3; best bloom, Mrs McAulay and Mrs Silcock equal 1, Mrs Powell 2, Mrs Scott 3; competitions, Mrs McAulay 1, Mrs Scott 2, Mrs Powell 3.

The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Powell (unopposed); vice-presidents, Mesdames Moffatt and Scott; hon. secretary, Mrs Keane; hon. treasurer, Mrs McAulay. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Scott and Peebles. The singing of the national anthem closed the afternoon.
