SWORDFISH CAUGHT

FIRST OF THE SEASON TAKEN AT MERCURY BAY The first swordfish of the season, a striped marlin weighing 3661 b, has been taken at the Mercury Bay grounds by Mr R. Nicholls, of Auckland. The fish struck while Mr Nicholls was trolling off Red Mercury at 7 a.m., and put up an exciting fight for two and a half hours. It was caught from the former Auckland 53-foot launch Kongo. It was Mr Nicholls’ first deep-sea fish. It was weighed at Whitianga Wharf by officials of the Mercury Bay Swordfish Club. Last season a black marlin of 9221 b was caught off the Mercury Islands by a Whitianga resident.

main hall is ready for use, the chairman, Mr H. T. Robinson, and several of the hall trustees were present. The builder, Mr T. L. C. Lowe, of Whitianga, was also present. Mesdames R. Martin and Les. Moyes supplied the music and Mi- Bill Moyes was M.C. Several dances have been held during the holiday period and all have been well attended, although there were only about half the usual number of visitors to Whitianga this season. Mr H. Lugg has spared no

effort to make the dances a success and Mr Whiter, of Auckland, was a capable and obliging M.C. All proceeds were for hall building funds.
