PAEROA CRICKET

By

"L.B.W.”

A feature of this year’s competition is the even strength of the four teams. The allocations have been well thought out and have resulted in some of the finest cricket seen in Paeroa for several years. * * * United went very "well against West and at one stage appeared to have prospects of an outright win .but M. Lally played one of his best innings to date and saved his side. This player is a hard man to shift once he plays himself in and he has a very solid defence. * * * Mat. Baker bowled very well for his first day out and more should be heard of him. He is the fastest bowler seen in Paeroa cricket up to date and his ability to swing the ball should bring him a good crop of wickets.

Cyril Taylor has improved of late and is a very useful man for United. He played a good opening innings but .became a little impatient and could not refrain from having a dip. An opening bat must have patience if he wants to do the job well.

Rex Beale’s effort against Railway should settle all doubts regarding his selection for the representative team. He has been keeping very well during the past weeks and the selector must be impressed -by his showing.

The need for fielding practice is as glaring as ever and if the Court Cup is to be brought to Paeroa this year something must be done to improve this department of the game. The West players dropped several catches and put themselves in a hopeless position as a result.

The first representative match of the year is played this week arid L.B.W. wishes the local team all the best against the strong Huntly eleven.
