MUSIC AND DRAMA

EVENING HELD IN PAEROA CHORAL & DRAMATIC CLOSING The first play presented by the Paeroa Dramatic Club at its closing night for this year, “ The Maid of Domremy,” was undoubtedly the best effort of the club to date. The setting of the play, though simple, was most effective and the atmosphere so essential to a drama of this type was struck from the rise of the curtain and maintained till it fell. The players and the producer deserve great credit for the excellence of the work performed. The second play, “ Wanted a Boy,” was a breezy little comedy. The pace of snappy comedy was admirably sustained throughout and the players registered a smooth performance. The entertainment value of this type is always appreciated by the audience. The Paeroa Choral Society under the baton of Mr G. Pinnock, in conjunction with the Thames Choral Society, also entertained during the evening. The society sang excerpts from “ Merrie England ” by German, the solo portions of which were sung by Mrs E. H. Kahn and Mr G. Pinnock. Trio parts were sung- by Mesdames T. G. Smith and G. W. Wild and Miss B. Parry.

The Paeroa choir sang: “ Spring Song,” “ Where Are You 'Going To My Pretty Maid,” and “Sunset and Evening Star.” Members of the ladies’ choir sang: “ Shepherds’ Dance ” and “ Songs My Mother Taught Me.” Trio, Mr and Mrs Kahn and Mr Pinnock, who sang “ Beautiful Dreamer ” and “ When Song Is Sweet.”

Duets by Mrs G. Wild and Mr R. Greenslade, “ Bird Songs at Eventide ” and “Oh Dry Those Tears.” Solos by Mrs Beale, “The Starling” and “ A Little Old Garden.” Mrs V. Scott of Thames also sang solos, “ The Nightingale,” “ Cradle Song,” “ Serenade ” and “Lullaby.” The accompanists were Mrs J. Ganley, Mrs J. 3rown and Mr Hill.
