PARADE OF CADETS
NGATEA HIGH SCHOOL INSPECTION BOARD’S VISIT DAUGHTER OF EMPIRE CUP Representing the Hauraki Plains area in the Daughters of Empire Cup annual competition, the Ngatea District High School cadet company gave a demonstration of their work and staged a march-past at the High School on Thursday morning. The competition is run in four sections with a separate award for each. The Ngatea District High School comes under section four which is for units under 100 in strength. At 10.30 a.m. the company assembled and • drew its rifles, and at 10.45 a.m. it was paraded for inspectionl by the board which consisted of Major L. A. Pearce, general staff officer (class 2), and Capt. B. J. McGregor, both from district headquarters, and Lieutenant W. J. Kennedy, New Zealand Regiment, of Papakura Military camp. After the inspection the company was dismissed and individual training exercises were begun.
In the charge of the N.C.O’s the sections demonstrated rifle drill and marching exercises before the board of inspection. That was continued for a while but had to be cut short because of the rain that developed. The final march-past was held about mid-day.
Other schools competing in the number 4 section against Ngatea are Cambridge, Kaitaia, and Howick. Last year the section was won by the Paeroa District High School.
.Captain M. G. Fowler, under whose control the cadet company comes, was present at the display and after he had returned he told the Gazette that the company had done very well. The boys, he said, were very keen and steady and displayed a good military bearing. There were a number of the local residents at the parade.
