BAY RETAINS TROPHY 1 POINT BETWEEN SCORES ONE OF SEASON’S BEST GAMES One of the best games of Rugby seen in Whitianga this season was the club match between Whitianga and Coromandel for the Kidd Cup, played last Saturday. Whitianga retained the cup by eight points to seven. Coromandel’s score consisted of a free kick and a remarkable field goal while Whitianga scored two tries, only one of which was converted.

The game was very fast with sound defence on both sides. There was a good deal of splendid forward play. ■Noticeable in the game was the absence of hold-ups. Play was stopped only <sce when W. Savage needed attention.

Whitianga kicked off with the wind and Coromandel forwards quickly settled down, dominating the scrutns for the first part. They pressed strongly and a determined run by Sydall looked promising but he was pushed out on the corner.

Whitianga adopted up and under tactics which gained ground for F. Chaney to secure and score, following a splendid solo effort. F. Chaney converted. Whitianga 5, Coromandel 0 Coromandel again swept to the attack with bright forward play. Quist opened play for Leggin and Denize to put in some nice work but Whitianga’s defence held. From a line-out on twenty-five, Quist, Coromandel halfback, astounded the crowd by dropping a beautiful field goal, making the score: Whitianga 5, Coromandel 4

Tight forward play followed with play at mid-field, when Sewell secured to open up. Whitianga backs handled well, but lost possession and Coromandel forced. From the drop out Coromandel forwards, led by JNgapo, gained ground with a fine loose rush. A good run by W. Wika•rere looked promising but failed through lack of support. An infringement by Whitianga gave M. Denize the opportunity to put over a nice penalty goal. Whitianga 5, Coromandel 7 Whitianga forwards began to settle down and get a greater share of the ball from the scrums. Davis opened up the play and after’ some good handling by Whitianga backs Rohrlach was pushed out. Whitianga continued to press but the Coromandel defence was sound. Ned Davis cleared nicely. Half-time came with Whitianga backs attacking. A nice cut in by C. Simpson failed through lack of support. After the interval Whitianga scored quickly, when Davis sent his backs away’ for Chaney and Fussey to handle twice in the movement. Fussey was pulled down -on the line but Peachey, who was in support, scored. The kick failed.

Whitianga ,8, Coromandel 7 With splendid play on both sides the game continued to be very fast. Excellent defence by Quist and Leggin saved Coromandel several times. From hard forward play Sewell made a - great opening but this was spoilt by a knock on. Whitianga forwards forced play to the goal-line where Gundlock cleared with a fine kick. M. Denize (Coromandel), gathered up the ball nicely and put in a very promising run but was well tackled by Jackman. From a scrum R. Lowe broke away with the bg.ll at toe and only sound defence by Gundlock stopped Whitianga from scoring. "Whitianga continued to press on the line but Quist cleared.
