LEASE WANTED

PART OF RESERVE

PAEROA BOWLING CLUB

APPLICATION TO COUNCIL An application by the committee of the Paeroa Bowling Club to lease a portion of the Rawhitiroa reserve from the Paeroa Borough Council, was made in a letter received by the August meeting of the council. The letter from the club’s secretary read as follows:—

“ My committee has instructed me to apply to your council for a lease of portion of the borough reserve adjoining the Te Aroha road for the purpose of laying down bowling greens.

Two Acres Wanted

“ The piece of land applied for is an area of about two acres. On the south western boundary is a belt of trees and the tennis courts. The club would like a strip of land adjoining this boundary 162 feet wide and extending from the road frontage right through to the back boundary fence. Two Greens Required “ The bowling club has for some time past been endeavouring to secure a suitable piece of land large enough for at least two greens to accommodate the growing list of members, and to- meet the future needs of the club. Anticipating the possibility of the Goldfields association attaining the status of a centre, my club hopes that Paeroa is the logical place for this headquarters but so long as we have one green only no reasonable claim could be made to having the Paeroa club acknowledged as such. “ The club’s immediate objective, therefore, is to lay down two greens as soon as possible and make provision for a third green at some future date.

Position on» Domain

“ The possibility of acquiring a second green on the domain is, it will be remembered, remote, if not quite impracticable without encroaching upon other sports bodies on the grounds.

“ By reason of its convenient location, fertile soil and natural advantages, the land applied for appeals strongly to the club as the solution to its problems.

“ My committee will be happy to discuss terms and conditions at any time' convenient to you,” the letter ended

Comments By Mayor

The mayor, Mr Edwin Edward-, stated that he for one would -be very sorry to see the bowlers go from the domain, but he thought that the council should give favourable consideration to the application. He suggested that a special committee should be set up to confer with the bowling club. Mr Edwards stated that he understood that the action in making the application was taken by - the committee and that the club as a whole had not been consulted.

Cr. E- L. Shaw stated that he thought that it was a Very wise move.

Against The Change

Cr. H. M. Shand said that he was against the change of the howling green. It would take away the charm from the domain and it would deprive some of the elderly players of the game if they had to walk to the proposed green. It would be a great pity to see the bowlers go from the domain, said Cr. W. H. Chamberlain. The town had to thank the old bowlers of Paeroa for the domain, for it had been through their unselfish a’ttitude that had provided the whole area. To Be Discussed Cr. R. P. Ganley pointed out that f: om the letter- the council did not know whether the bowling club intended to abandon trie domain green.
