GALVANISED IRON

QUESTION OF SUPPLIES

.STATEMENT BY MINISTER

What stocks of galvanised iron for roofing were held in New Zealand, and what were the prospects of procuring increased supplies from overseas, Mr A. ,S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, asked the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, in the House of Representatives recently.

Mr Semple (Minister of Works) replied: “On July 1 last there were 29 tons of galvanised corrugated iron in stock in New Zealand. Since then, however, shipments aggregating 3,18 tons have been received and distributed. Monthly supplies during the past six months have averaged 250 tons, but it is not expected that more than 1000 tons will be received during the ensuing six months. Every effort has been and is being made by the Government to have allocations increased, but so far without success. The United Kingdom export quota has been cut down twice in successive quarterly periods of this year.”
