KEEN BASKETBALL

PAEROA INDOOR CLUB

BOYS CREATE INTEREST

BORSTAL BECOME COMPETENT

Spectators were again treated to a good display of keen, fast basketball on Wednesday night when further games in the Paeroa Basketball Club’s competition were played. The greatest interest was shown in the newly formed boys’ team under the capable leadership of lan Grant. These boys have put in a great deal of practice during the last week or two and what they lack in physical advantage is made up by their science. They have worked up an efficient and polished combination and play to a carefully prepared plan of action in contrast to several other teams whose play is governed by the dictates of the moment. Their positional play should provide an object lesson to the other teams who rely on bustling tactics alone.

Rangers scored a convincing win over Borstal last week and were expected to have a comfortable victory over the Boys but much to everyone’s surprise they just managed to scrape home. It was a game which kept everyone on their toes and full credit must go to the Boys for an outstanding display of how the game should be played. A. Stevenson, I. Grant and S. Nield played outstanding games and were ably supported by Saunders and Wheeler. D. Kemp and M. Kemp played solidly for Rangers. Borstal Old Boys had a fairly easy win over Dodgers and again profited from their, opponents’ lack of practice. The Dodgers have the makings of a good side but never seem capable of solid team work. They play well individually and it is to be hoped that they will do something in the way of tactics and accurate shooting in the near future. Borstal on the other hand are becoming very competent shooters and seldom miss once they are in a shooting position. P. Fathers played the sound game expected of him and found very able support in D. Martin and P. Gregson.

The newly formed Grammarians’ team found Rovers a tough proposition and lack of experience and condition gradually wore them down. However they are very keen and played well for their first game in the competition. When they learn' to mark their. man and to combine a little more they will .be a good team. Rovers played well and their best players were L. Davies and J. Lally with R. Kere always prominent. W. Williams and M. Millar played well for Grammarians.

The ladies’ match was a keen one and the successful Netherton combination continued on its winning way. They all played really well and it was difficult to pick any one outstanding player. They were very quick to make use of any lapse on the part of their opponents and were always on the watch for an opportunity to attack. The A.C.A. played very well and were perhaps a little unlucky. They were up against an experienced combination and should be credited with a really good performance. L. Martin and P. Harold played very soundly and showed a good knowledge of the rules of the game.

A game was given to junior members and their play kept the onlookers greatly amused. They are very enthusiastic and some of them are already showing distinct possibilities. Detailed results were: Rovers 14 v. Grammarians 5; Borstal 14 v. 4; Rangers 4 v. Boys 3; Netherton 12 v.’ A.C.A. 4.
