FARMER OBJECTS

ROAD THROUGH HIS FARM

DECISION OF THE COUNCIL

At the April meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council a letter was received from Mr T. J. Hicks, of Tauranga Road, Waihi, opposing any proposal to form a road through his property. The letter stated: — “I have been informed that there is a proposal for forming a new road through a portion of my land on Tauranga Road, an area which I have recently worked up and is to be sown down in grass as soon as the grass-seed comes to hand. lam definitely opposed to the road going through my land, and if the matter comes before the council I would like to express my views.” Mr Hicks also attended the council meeting and expressed his views against the proposed road which would give more convenient access across his property to two farmers who were affected by the deviation of the main road.

The engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, stated that to bring the old road into use would entail considerable work to reform, metal and culvert. Cr. S. 11. Thompson believed that some solution should be possible between the property holders and proposed shelving the matter for one month. This was seconded by Cr. G. A. Avery and carried. Mr Hicks agreed to this course. The county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, stated that if a solution was arrived at it might be possible to have the old road closed and incorporated in the adjoining property.
