GOOD WORK DONE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING AT KEREPEEHI REVIEW OF THE PAST YEAR An interesting report on the work done during the last two years by the Kerepeehi School Committee was presented by the chairman, Mt W. Bailey, at the biennial meeting of householders held recently. The report read as follows:— “In submitting my first biennial report on the activities of my committee I first wish to thank you for your interest in the children of our district by your attendance. Grounds Improved “’During the last two years I feel that the work done has been on the lines' followed by our predecessors for the betterment of Kerepeehi Stehool. The football playing area has had over field tiles laid with a consequent improvement of the field. The fences have been put in ordei’ and battened. The area round the school has been improved l by tarring' and another top dressing has been granted by the Education Board. This work is to be done almost immediately. Dental Clinic “Your committee has also been instrumental in the granting of a Dental 'Clinic. This building, a decided acquisition to the school’s requireiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiin

In order to relieve congestion the committee has made representations to (he board' for the building of another room. 'The Education Board appreciates the school’s difficulties and has made representations to the department for the transfer of a vacant building or the erection of another room. Raising of Funds “The financial side of our work shows a credit balance. The large amount of work done, with the smallness of our grant can only l give a credit balance by the supplementing our funds by ,other means. The teachers. and pupils have given their assistance by the holding of a bazaar and a school concert. Both of these showed good credit balances. “The school’s progress has been steady. The inspectors’ reports which we have had 1 , have shown that the work of the school is good. In sport the school has performed excellently. I do not need to give in detail the attainments of our pupils in swimming, athletics, football and basketball. Worthwhile Job “In conclusion I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the loyal co-operation of my fellow members. Some people may look upon the voluntary service given by residents as a thankless task but I would say that the regular meetings discussing problems, giving assistance to our own children and in bettering the conditions of our district are a really worth while job that gives intense

satisfaction to those who do the work a knowing that the children are going tc beneifit.

Attendance Not Good “'‘There is one side of the school that is not satisfactory and I wish to ask for your help in improving the attendance. Irregular attendance affects the progress of the pupils concerned, the rest of the class and the school in general. “Too often the excuses offered' are unfair to the school—a trip to Paeroa, shopping expeditions, -visit of a friend, and just absent. I do ask for your assistance in this matter so that the progress of all the children may not suffer. Absences through sickness are of course warranted and are not in question. “Finally my thanks to all who have helped to make these two years a success and may the incoming committee continue to add to the efficiency of Kerepeehi School. Memorial Gates “At this meeting I would! like to draw your attention to the necessity for erecting in your school or on the grounds some permanent form of tribute to those who served in the World Wars 1 and 2>. Your committee has given the matter some consideration but thought it advisable to bring the matter before the householders meeting to get both agreement on the need for erection and also to decide the type of memorial. “The best suggestion we have to offer is memorial gates. 'The front layout of the school is a matter that will be receiving attention and stone column's with an arch built in stones from New Brighton Beach would both add to the appearance of the school and be a most suitable tribute to those who fought in two crises. ’“Another form of memorial could be an honours board erected in the school. Another type could be a play area for the junior pupils with a brass plaque commemorating the services rendered by Kerepeehi boys. I offer these suggestions, as discussions for this meeting.”
