HAURAKI PLAINS RATE DECISION OF THE COUNCIL £5,528 DEFICIT ESTIMATED Notice of intention to strike a general rate of 4d. in the £1 on the unimproved value was given at a special meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council held on Wednesday, when the estimates for 1946-47 were considered. This rate is the same as that struck last year and according to estimates produced by the county clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, will show a deficit on expected expenditure of £5,528. The county clerk in his report stated that if the hospital rate was halved and a £1 for £1 subsidy granted on road work, as he hoped, this deficit would be more than wiped off on similar estimates for 1947-48.

In a comprehensive and lengthy report (which will be published in full in a later issue)' the clerk urged the council to step warily before embarking on anything new in work or plant, claiming that there was nothing that could not be postponed; for at least a year after which a clear perspective of costs and Government policy might be apparent. After the estimates had been discussed at some length it was decided to purchase a new four yard truck at an approximate cost of £1,200. It was agreed to increase the price of metal for private sales' from the quarry by 2/- per yard.
