SOCIAL EVENING
A LARGE GATHERING VARIETY PERFORMANCE GIVEN Well over 200 people were present at a social evening in St. James’ Hall last night, when a delightful variety programme was presented under the capable direction of Mrs I. E. Johnson, of Turua. Highlights of the evening were the items by the Rar.gi-
marie Maoris, who opened the concert with a song of welcome. (Songs’ by Mrs A. M. Lithgow and Miss Josie Brady and an elocution item by Mr Ray McKenzie followed. Other items in order were:—
Tap dance, Ngatea Women’s Institute; song. Mr Ron Downie; play, ‘’Sentimental Lady.” Thames Institute; action song, Rangimarie; elocution, Miss Vai. M'c'Combe; Hawaiian number, Ngatea; song, Miss Josie Brady; tambourine dance. Mrs May Clayton; tap dance, Mrs R- Dudley; Mrs Lithgow gave two song numbers. The programme concluded with the Rangimarie Maoris doing a poi dance and a spirited haka, which drew tremendous laughter and applause. Miss Paul thanked the performers, and drew the attention of the audience to dis'play of work of the Maori Institute. 'This was a most interesting exhibition of mats and baskets and a woven baby’s bassinet drew much attention.
The Arbury .'Cup, won during the afternoon for the competition table, was presented to Mrs Bell, president of the (Puriri Institute. The prize donated by Mrs Johnson, of Turua was awarded to Mrs McCollum, and the dBl/1/- prize for tatting went to Mrs 'Hare, of Maramarua. 'Supper was served to all- present.
