OBITUARY

MR CHARLES TUNNARD METTAM OLD PAEROA RESIDENT The death occurred recently of an old and highly-respected resident of Paeroa, Mr Charles Tunnard Mettam, aged 66 years. The late Mr Mettam was born in Wanganui but later attended the Hamilton' Primary School. He followed the joinery trade on leaving school, working for Mr James McAndrew of Paeroa from 1895 and later for Messrs Le Manquais 'Lamb & Co., being factory manager for this firm.

He took a keen interest in the Masonic Lodge and was secretary of the Ohinemuri Royal Arch Chapter for many years.. He was a past chairman of the Paeroa District High School Committee and a past president of the Paeroa Bowling Club. Keenly interested' in music> the late Mr Mettam was interested in the Paeroa Municipal Band for some 20 years and did much to foster interest in music in the town.

He wasi interested in sport generally, especially in athletics and football. He was a member of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club. He was funeral director in Paeroa for approximately 35 years. He married Miss Lily Beatrice Clausen of Woonona, New South Wales in 1912, who predeceased him. He is survived by his two sons, Messrs 'Leslie Tunnard l Mettam (Auckland), and Cecil Charles Mettam (Paeroa), and seven sisters, Mrs A. H. Fletcher, Mrs S. G. Fletcher, Mrs L. Eaton, Mrs L. Wilkin, Mrs W. 'Greenwood, Mrs J. Sadler, Mrs E. Jones- all of Auckland'. MR WALTER GILBERT POPE INTEREST IN YOUTH WORK The death occurred at the Thames Hospital last night of Mr Walter Gilbert Pope, aged 20 years, eldest son of Mr and Mrs*W. J. Pope, of Paeroa. Born at Paeroa, the late Mr Pope was educated at the Paeroa District High School and later joined l the staff of the Hauraki Plains Gazette. He took a keen interest in. the affairs of the town and did good work in the Scout and Youth Club movements. He was assistant Cub Master and acting assistant Scout Master and had recently been elected president of the Paeroa Youth Club. He was also assisting with the work at the Sunday School of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Paeroa. A young man of good character, showing promise for the future, his sudden death is a definite loss to the community.
