WORK IN COUNTY

BRIDGES NOW A PROBLEM OHINEMURI COUNCIL QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE Maintenance work on the Ohinemuri County was reported on at the September meeting of the council by the engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, as follows: '“Before shifting the crushing plant from Owharoa the metalling of Pukekauri road was completed and.’ various roads in the Waikino area were patched; altogether, 03’8 cubic yards were crushed. The plant has been shifted to the Thames road 1 quarry, and a' start made with crushing. Bridge maintenance this .period has been heavier than usual and stocks of timber held for this purpose are diminishing rapidly. Owing to the amount of maintenance being done, the repairs to the boundary bridge on the Hikutaia-Netherton main highway have not been attended l to. Holderway’s bridge on the Old Tauranga road has been closed for the past three weeks. Stringers sufficiently long for repairs are being removed from the temporary bridge on the back road, Mangaiti. The approaches to the new culvert on the back road have been filled, but it has not been possible to do anything in connection with the straightening of the road on account of the men and trucks being required at the quarries and on other more urgent works.

conditions have prevented the completion of the metalling on Thorp’s road.

‘‘The continued wet weather has a very detrimental effect on all roads, and it has been necessary during the absence of the crushing plant from this end of the county, to obtain metal from the quarry company.

'’‘All plant is working and is in reasonably good condition. Tyres for the trucks came to hand and have been fitted. Repairs were made to the Waihi crusher, the plant being held up for less time than was anticipated.

'“The half-ton truck, which has been in use for over eight years, is in need of a complete overhaul.” The report was adopted.
