WORK IN DRAINS

HAURAKI UNITED AREA

ACTIVITIES OF THE MONTH

REPORT FROM THE FOREMAN

The following comprehensive report on work done to drains in the board’s area during the past month was tabled by the foreman, Mr W. Johnson, at the September meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board.

“Turua-Netherton roadside drain, west side from Kerepeehi road to floodgate.—‘From floodgate to opposite J- Fisher’s cowshed has been cleaned on wages and from Porritt’s outlet to Young’s southern boundary cleaned!. Ngatiapua roadside drain fronting Beagley’s property cleaned, wages. Ngatiapua roadside drain, north side from pipes across Ngatiapua road to bend in road opposite Murray’s, section cleaned, wages. 1 Kauri stringers at the depot have been stacked in the shed. Ngatiapua roadside drain, south side from BeagleyClevely boundary to Ko.puarahiOrongo road has been cleaned, part contract, part wages. Hauraki roadside drain, west side from Towers outlet to J. Gray’s centre drain. A few chains of this has been improved, wages. Willow extension drain from Te Kauri No. 1 to Te Kauri No. 2 and from Te Kauri No. 2 to Orchard East road has been completed', also a slip removed from same drain. Slip In Drain “Loader-Greenway drain. — About three chains up from Hamilton road there is a slip which needs removing. This has come ini from the (north side of the drain. Zig-Zag drain, from Ansford-Bagnall outlet drain to block in drain has been cleaned, also the artesian bore on Mr Fathers’ section has been blocked. Willow extension drain: A part of this drain had to have the bottom 1 shovelled as it bad silted up badly due to silt washing out of the three drains at Orchard East road.

“Orchard East roadside drain, north side from Willow extension to McComb’s pipes at garage lias been deepened) to bottom of pipes. “’Shell bank drain.—Mr Mearns rang me and 1 told l me that there was something wrong with the floodgate as the drain was filling up with the tides and I went out and inspected the gate and) found an old post in it. “Kopuarahi roadside drain from Ngatiapua road to school corner, south side.—There is'a part of this

drain where stock has been getting out and grazing along the drain bank and a letter has been sent to the owner. Drain Needs Deepening “Price's drain—A part of this drain needs deepening as it always holds a fair amount of dead water up towards K.K. road. There is what is called a ‘back’ in this section of the drain. To improve this it would be necessary to start deepening a few chains down below from where the dredge l knocked off. There are also a few more places further down in this drain where the batter needs improving as the bottom is getting very narrow. (“McLarin’s drain.—l reported' last meeting about stock damaging this drain. I have inspected the drain again and find that stock are still damaging the batter of the drain, on the south side.

“K.-K. roadside drain from Price’s pipes along Tye-Thompson boundary. To recondition this part of drain it would have to be laid back from the landowner’s side of the drain and just trimmed up on the road 1 side.

“Mr Martinovitch rang me and said he had received a second letter from the board about the cuttings reported he had put through the ditch bank into Miller-Hamilton 1 drain. I had a fair conversation with him and it was arranged that we should. 1 go out together and inspect the cuttings. I wanted him to go next day but he said that he had to go to a horse sale. I have met him since near his residence when I was out inspecting drains but he was still too busy as he had to go to Paeroa. He said that there was no hurry as the cuttings Had not caused any damage yet and if they did he would 1 pay the costs. I cannot see why he does not put the cuttings in his own private drain as it runs parallel with the board’s drain and empties into Hamilton-Loader drain. The distance between these two drains is between 5 and 6 chains.

“Sutton’s drain.—Ml* Sutton reported that a place in this drain had started to squeeze in. This is on the north side. I have not inspected it yet. drain. —A small slip from the north side a few chains down from K.K. road has been removed. “I am now on improving work with the wages men and would appreciate advice if any further cleaning work remains to be done.” It was decided to carry out the woi’k of. weeding and taking up the bottom of Price’s drain as soon as men were available.

It was decided to request Mr Martinovich to seal the cut into the MillerHamilton drain and drain into his own private drain.
