THAMES FISHING

VALUE OF INDUSTRY INCREASE DURING YEAR REPORT BEFORE THE HOUSE Details of last year’s increase of the fishing industry at Thames are given in the report on sea fisheries for the year ended March 31, 1945, contained in the annual report of the Marine Department and presented to Parliament last week. The quantities of wet fish landed at Thames are set. out as follow: — 1943- 18,302 cwt. 1944- 19,691 cwt. Thus there was an increase last year of 1389 cwt. in the landings. The value of the catch is given as under: — 1943- £28,044 1944- £29,665 The report .states that there has been a steady increase of trevally, gurnard and pioke (dog-fish) during the last few years, probably on account of the increased demand for these cheaper but perfectly nutritious kinds of fish. Set-net fishing provided 18,361 cwt., or 03.3 per cent of tlie total fish landed in the past year. In the previous year the corresponding figures were 15,545 cwt, or 84.9 per cent. In 1944-45 one of the two Danish seining vessels in Thames was laid up some months, which accounts for the reduction in the year's total of this class of fishing to 1273 cwt. (6.5 per cent of the port total) from 2229 cwt. or 12.2 per cent for the previous year.
