KAIHERE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE RESULT OF THE COMPETITION The monthly -meeting of the Kaihere Women’s Institute was held’ at the 'War Memorial Pavilion on Thursday 13 September. Mrs Jack McDonald presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened' with the singing of the Institute ode and the reading of the Prayer. Routine business was dealt with before lunch. Among the correspondence were letters asking for help for the Orphanages Appeal and' the Christmas Appeal for lepers. It was deceided to hold a special Bring and Buy table at the next meeting and to invite the Patetonga Women’s Institute members and local residents to be present. It was also decided! to accept the kind 1 offer of Mr Havill of Paeroa to visit Kaihere and give a talk on the culture and' preparation of dahlias for shows.

The competeition “Something New from Something Old” was won by Mrs V. Wilkins. Mrs L. Williams was second and’ Mrs R. Benny, third. 'Commandant Sawyer of the Salvation Army spoke of some of his experiences when he was stationed at Rotoroa Island as one of the officers in charge. Mrs McDonald thanked Commandant. Sawyer for his interesting and 1 amusing talk. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs W. Wallis and Mrs A. G. Davis, the meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem. WAITAKARURU INSTITUTE ADDRESS BY MRS LAING The president of the Waitakaruru Women’s Institute, Mrs H. Wallis, was in the chair at the September meeting when the attendance was good.

Following the singing of the Institute song and’ the reading of the prayer, Mrs Wallis asked members to stand as a mark of respect for the fallen, who must be remembered even, though there was rejoicing at the final victory over the enemies.

Sympahty was expressed at the illness of the treasurer Mrs J. Brown and Mrs T. Perry, both being at present in the Thames Hospital and flowers will be sent to them there.

It was decided that as the appeals for war needs would become less, that an appeal from the Leper Committee should be acceeded to, and that this institute would adopt a Leper. The garment asked for by the executive for the Polish children had been made by Mesdames T. Harris, and B. Caie, Mrs J. Pacey having donated' the material for a frock.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorder Mr 'Harley Wallis for the amount of time and work he spent on the stage lighting at the Victory Concert, also to Mr W. Hegh for the decorative work, and all who assisted in making the concert the huge success it was. Thanks were also tendered to Mrs Wallis for the work and arrangements she undertook for the celebrations on V.J. night, following the pictures. Arrangements were made for the coming birthday. M'angatarata members acted as hostesses for the lunch and following this Mrs A. E. Laing gave a talk on “A holiday at Tauranga.” In her inimitable way she held the attention of her listeners by her description of this delightful spot, mentioning the beauties of the place, the fishing, the man with the tame seagulls, and then the historic old Mission House giving in great detail all the interesting exhibits which are so graciously shown by the present owner Miss Alice Maxwell, a niece of the late Arch Deacon Brown, the founder of the mission. Miss Maxwell’s affection for the historic place leads her to spend her life in its care, and she is justly proud to show- interested visitors the many antiques which she is justly proud to own. Mrs Laing concluded! with the reading of two delightful poems which Miss Maxwell had 1 written, A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker which was followed by the singing of the ■National Anthem. The winners of the Best Bloom competition were Mrs A. Coxhead 1. Mrs S. Caie 2, Mrs J. Pacey 8.
