15TH. BIRTHDAY
PAEROA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON A pleasant evening was enjoyed by all when the Paeroa Women’s Institute celebrated their fifteenth birthday in the Civic Hall. The president, Mrs E. M. Hill, welcomed friends and members of sister institutes, including Hobsonville and Te Awamutu. Waihi was especially well represented. Miss Paul, president of the Thames-Hau-i-aki .Plains Federation was also present. The programme commenced with the singing of the National Anthem followed by a very bright “Mammie” scene comprising of solos and choruses. An appreciative audience listened to musical items, piano and violin, by Mt and Mrs A. R. Kay, also to the duets by Misses 81.B 1 . Smith and B. Saunders. “Seeing the Pantomime,” a one-act play, by members of the- entertainment committee evoked l much laughter. Mrs G. Saunders as “Aubrey” was very ably assisted by Mesdames Marsh, C. Whisker, E. Spinks, I. F. Homer and Miss B. Smith. •Some artistic and colourful bouquets and sprays were presented. The president expressed the institute’s thanks to Master Spinks for his assistance and to Masters H. and B. Smith for their good work prior to the birthday.
The large birthday cake made by Mrs W. Allen and iced by a friend of the institute looked very attractive. The vice-presidents, Mesdames E. Marsh and J. Brown 1 , had the honour to light and extinguish the candles.
With Mrs V. Turton as commentator, the “Waxworks” were greatly admired. The characters were:—Mrs E. Marsh, An Australian Swagger; Mrs I. Homer, A Chinese Lady; Mrs E. M. Hill, Absentminded Professor; Mrs W. Allen, All Nations; Mrs C. Whisker, Convict; Mrs E. Spinks, Spanish Lady; Mrs 'G. Saunders and Mrs I. Smith, Plunket Twins; Mrs H. E. Williams, Old Lady; Miss B. Smith, Peace.
Mrs J. Brown and Mr G. Jennings generously supplied the music for dancing with Mesdames I. F. Homer and V. Turton as 'M’s.C.
A guessing competition in the nature of a mime, the actions from lines of an old song, was won by Mrs Brenan, Auckland. Mrs W. Crirnmins was the winner of the wall competition.
A tasty supper was served l under the supervision of Mesdames Peterson, M. Beattie and'T. 'Lipsham. Doorkeeper, Mrs Elvidge.
