SOCIAL AFTERNOON

WAITAKARURU ANGLICANS

AID FOR DEVASTATED MISSIONS.

A social afternoon was held in the Anglican Parish Hall, Waitakaruru, on Thursday afternoon, when there was a fair attendance. The purpose of the function was to help to raise funds for the devastated missions in the Pacific, which have suffered considerably since the islands have ibeen occupied iby the Japanese.

■The Rev. Niblock read extracts from letters from soldiers l giving examples of the wonderful help received from the natives, who only about fifty years ago were, in many cases, savages and headhunters. There was proof given in these letters of the great amount of 'benefit which the church missioners have done, (but much reconstruction is needed for the continuance of the work, now that so many of the islands are free once more.

Competitions were a feature of the afternoon and a sales table was well filled and equally well patronised. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee. Mrs N. W. Hedges' thanked’ Mr Nilblock for reading the letters, and said she was sure that help would be forthcoming for the missions l . Amongst those present were:—

Mesdames 'Niblock, N. Hedges, C. Death, T. Evans, W. Simpson, F. Stretton, A. McClean, A. Otter, J. Williams, iF. Francis, E. 'Parsons, W. S. Cox, S. W. Tate, H. Adams, W. Wallace, J. Lee, R. Duffin. Misses* .Stubbs and M. French.
