BAY INSTITUTE

AN ENJOYABLE MEETING INTERESTING CHARADE VISITORS FROM MARAMARUA The Mercury Bay Women’s Institute meeting was fairly well attended on Thursday, February 8. One new member was welcomed by the president, Mrs Ralph, who also expressed her pleasure in welcoming two visitors from the Maramarua Institute, Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Heaven. The secretary, Mrs Bronlund, it was reported, was in hospital, and hopes were expressed for a speedy recovery. Mrs Sharpies took her place for the time being. A good deal of business was discussed. Mrs Ralph was appointed to attend the newly-formed federation in Thames once a month. It is to be known as the Thames-Hauraki Plains Women’s Institute Federation and Mrs Sharpies is the appointed delegate to attend in March. Arrangements were made for the birthday to be held in February in the Bay.

Mrs 'Ralph and Miss Lyon were appointed trustees for the new fund opened for the rest room and a committee to work in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce in raising funds.

Mrs Baldwin was asked W the president to speak of their Women’s Institute at Maramarua. In a happy little speech Mrs Baldwin discussed the programme, husbands’ evening being quite a popular one there. ’Eight, parcels are sent to soldiers or men of the services each month. A gala day is held each year and about £BO is collected for this purpose. They, are fortunate in having such speakers asjj Mrs Victor Macky, president of the Auckland Travel Club and Miss Elsie K. Morton to lecture. "A good drama. club is active, also the junior branch, of the Women’s Institute. They have been as near as fourth for the Dornier Banner.

A lovely afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs J. McLeod, Mrs C. Hare and Mrs H. McKenzie.

Competitions results were:—'Vase of flowers: Mrs Brown 1, Mrs M. McLead 2.

A charade acted by Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Brophy caused some amusement. Nine popular songs were chosen and acted in costume. Quick changes were necessary. However, Mrs Baldwin was 1 splendid acting the part of a man. The act was humorous and entertaining. The songs chosen were: —“The Lost Chord,” “Little Old Lady Passing By,” “Alice Blue Gown,” “Passing By,” “Pack Up Your Troubles,” “Where Did You Get That Hat,” “I’ll Walk Beside You,” “Another Little Drink,” and “Whispering.” ’ Three .members were successful in tying with six songs correct, Mrs Russell, Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Stocker. The prize was drawn for and Mrs Russell was the winner.

A bracket of songs, “I Love The Moon,” and “I Was Dreaming,” was very sweetly sung by Mrs Russell accompanied by Mrs Sharpies who also played a piano solo very nicely. A very pleasant afternoon closed with the National Anthem.
