SUCCESSFUL DAY

SPORTS AT WAITAKARURU HORSE & ATHLETIC EVENTS GATE TAKINGS SHOW INCREASE There was some doubt as to how kind the weather would be for the second annual sports meeting to be held at Waitakaruru. Fortunately the rain held off and' Saturday saw a good crowd on the property of Mr H. F. Purnell. The gate takings show an increase on last year and the number of entrants in the different classes too, was higher. The stalls.proved a popular feature and before the day was over, the refreshment, ice cream and soft drink stalls were all sold out. The produce stall was-well supplied and did a big’ trade, as did the flower stall, where the ladies in .charge made quantities of sprays and buttonholes.; Through the generosity of' several people, there, were no less than ten competitions,' which kept those in charge fully occupied. A sheep guessing competition drew a .large number of entries. It was gratifying to the committee to see so many people from outlying districts particularly the visit of the member of Parliament for the district, Mr A. S. Sutherland, who was an interested spectator. ,
