FUNCTION IN COROMANDEL

ANNUAL 'W.D.F.U. EVENT

SPLENDID DISPLAY OF FLOWERS

The eighth annual flower show held under the auspices of the Coromandel branch of the’ Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union was held in St. George’s Hall, Coromandel, on Saturday, October 38. There was a splendid display of flowers, cookery, needlework and a record number of school children’s entries.

The trading table was well stocked' and was soon sold out,, while the competition table did good business.

Just before the show was opened officially, the Coromandel 'Silver Band played several selections outside the hall, which greatly assisted in attracting quite a number of people. At the conclusion of the band’s items, Mrs Anderson on behalf of the W.D.F.U. thanked the members of the band for their gesture and assistance

by coming along and playing such a good programme. The action of the Band was deeply appreciated 'by the W.D.F.U. Big Attendance A large crowd of the public assembled in the hall when the president, Mrs Anderson, introduced Mrs /Drinkwater, a foundation member of the Women’s Division movement here and then called on the county chairman, Mr E. Deeble, to open the show. “I deem it a very great pleasure to be associated with you all to-day to take part in this, you eighth annual flower show,” said Mr Deeble. “The splendid blooms, the home cookery, and children’s entries are really wonderful and the atmosphere of friendly competition is pleasing indeed. lam thankful to all you people for coming along in such numbers — it is a marvellous attendance, particularly in view of the fact that another function is being held in the town on the same day. The interest shown by such a large number of people is an incentive and gesture to encourage everyone to come along and do even better njext year. I congratulate the prize winners, particularly drawing’ attention to the children’s section which reflects great credit on the teachers for their interest in their pupils. It now g-ives me very great pleasure to declare this flower show open.”

Branch Congratulated

Mrs Drinkwater congratulated the Coromandel branch of the W.D.F.U. on their success. She gave a short outline of the activities of the division in .general, mentioning the housekeeping scheme and the splendid rest homes which are being run for the benefit of sick and tired' womenkind. She said it gave her very great pleasure to be here in Coromandel to-day-on this great occasion.

Mrs Anderson thanked all those members and friends who had worked so hard to make the show such a success, especially the judges who had performed a very difficult task. A telegram was received from Mrs J. Ecclestone conveying greetings and 1 best wishes for a successful day. A dainty afternoon tea was served during the afternoon, and was very much enjoyed by the patrons. The names of the prizewinners in the various sections will be published in the next issue of the ‘Gazette.
